What is FiveThirtyEight?
FiveThirtyEight is a new website which focuses on analysis of polls, politics, economics, and sporting events. Nate Silver, baseball analyst at the time, started FiveThirtyEight November 1st 2007. This site was founded as a polling aggregation website with blog. The website received its name from the numbers of electors within the United States electoral college. The site began its rise to fame when in August of 2010 the blog was featured in the New York Times online. Shortly after this feature, ESPN bought FiveThirtyEight in 2013. Once ESPN gained control over the news site, the popularity increased as well as the variety of topics discussed within the site. Nate Silver still writes for FiveThirtyEight and is in fact the Chief Editor today. With increasing popularity and over 850,000 followers on Twitter, FiveThirtyEight is sure to eventually become one of the top dogs in the online news industry.
